What is sand tray therapy?
Sand tray therapy is commonly understood as a form of expressive or play-based therapy. In a typical clinical setting, a trained therapist provides a tray of sand, a collection of miniature figures or objects, and a structured environment where the client can build scenes, explore symbols, and reflect on what appears in the tray.
The phrase can sometimes be used loosely online, but in professional contexts it usually refers to a therapeutic method, not simply any object that includes sand. A decorative sand garden, desk object, or self-directed tactile activity may involve sand, touch, and visual patterning, but that does not make it sand tray therapy.
