Tabletop Sand Art Sets for Adults

Part of the beauty of Sand Art is that it can take as long or a short a time as you want. Spend half an hour unwinding when you get home from work. Or with a sand art set on your desk you can spend five minutes between calls and then come back to do more at lunch.

I need to do something creative each day, I want to do something artistic, but so many things take planning. I love to paint but by the time I have things setup and my oil paints mixed it always seems to be time to think about cooking or heading to the shops, or heading to bed.

Sometimes I manage to paint for half an hour and then have to waste unused paint and spend another half an hour cleaning brushes.

I'm not giving up painting, just saving it for the weekends. During the week sand art is a much better choice, I don't have to plan it I can just stat playing with a sand sphere and create something new. If I'm tired I can't really even make a mistake, unlike with a painting I've been working on for a month. If I don't like the patterns I've made I can brush the sand flat and start again.

Plenty of space in this sand tray and some really fun patterns, I do like the naturalistic patterns, but the stars sphere here is great and gives so many possibilities and with the smaller bubbles sand sphere I can feel like I'm deep in a nebula.

Relaxing with Sand Art

As mentioned creating sand patterns can be a perfect way to wind down after a long day at work. If I just sit down in front of the TV I tend to find I'm actually still thinking about what I didn't manage to finish before I left the office, or overthinking what someone said. Rolling a sand sphere over sand it is taking up just enough of my concentration to push those thoughts out, without feeling like hard work

On the weekends I like to take things slowly in the mornings, if I get the chance, and playing with a Wonderscape just seems to naturally fit in to that: maybe with a good mug of coffee and some music in the background. At first it felt decadent, there's always something I should be doing, but now it feels like something I deserve and owe myself, laundry and housework can wait.

Why it Works

A reminder of Sand Play during Childhood

It seems that playing with sand is something kids do all over the world, whether on a beach, in a park sand pit or in a backyard. I did too of course and I'm guessing you did, but why? It feels like something children have probably done for 10s of 1000s of years.

Maybe playing with sand gives children the chance to learn how they can interact with and impact the world around them, making patterns, building, using our hands directly with a basic material, with infinite possibilities, to make something new.

Why is that just something for children though? Playing with a sand tray and making art on my own terms brings back memories of childhood holidays at the beach.
