How the Active Hand Helps the Mind

Tetris players are teaching something about how the hand helps the mind.
In an experiment run by cognitive scientists, they found that highly skilled Tetris players move blocks as they fall more than the game requires. A player may rotate the block three or four more times after identifying a working pattern. When discussing why they did this, the scientists discovered that rotating the Tetris block was a tactile part of their thinking process during the game. It is faster to turn the piece on the screen to visualize a change than it is to visualize it in the player's mind.
This counterintuitive finding became a strong foundation for cognitive scientists who were interested in the habits of creatives, makers, and thinkers. When a task increases in challenge, the hand reaches for something to do. It may shuffle papers, doodle on a post-it, or click a pen repeatedly.

This article explores what cognitive scientists have learned about how the hand supports thinking, moving through three familiar habits: shuffling, doodling, and rolling. It is written for writers, designers, teachers, students, and anyone curious about how the body shapes thought.

Shuffling

In the Tetris study we opened with, researchers gave a name to the process he found. He called it epistemic action, defined as a physical action a person takes to make a thinking task easier. Rotating a Tetris piece to see how it will fit is an epistemic, or knowledge-creating, action. This action provides the player with knowledge they apply while thinking about the game.
A famous author writing in The Paris Review in 1967 shared his hand habit. He writes scenes on index cards in the order they arrive to him, and then he shuffles the cards until he is satisfied with the story arc of the book. He describes the process this way: “The pattern of the thing precedes the thing. I fill in the gaps of the crossword at any spot I happen to choose.”
The shuffling was about composition and determining the book's final shape. It was a tactile thinking process that allowed his hand to control the structure in a low-risk way, which could be further adjusted and moved. This is not unlike the Tetris strategy. Both use the hand at work to arrange a winning and complete composition as a cognitive task.
Doodling

In her groundbreaking article, psychologist Jackie Andrade shared surprising results on how doodling supports thinking. In her experiment, two groups listened to a boring, rambling phone message and wrote down the names of party guests from the call. Half of the group was instructed to doodle or shade in printed shapes while they listened. The other group only listened. Later, in a recall memory test, the doodle group scored approximately 29% higher than their non-doodling peers. The hand-in-action approach allowed for deeper cognitive retention.
To understand the underlying process, researchers pressed further. What is it about active hands and thinking that makes a difference? Researcher Susan Goldin-Meadow makes this her career focus. She found that even hand gesturing strengthens recall. Moving the hands seems to increase cognitive space to focus on harder tasks.
Rolling
When the mind is working, there is a consistent motion the hand often makes. It turns something over, rotating in a continuous circle. At New York University (NYU), two computer scientists studied how small objects that engage the hand affect thinking processes. They found examples of objects people keep at their desk and how they handle them through turning, rolling, pressing, and sliding.
People used these hand habits to steady their attention and move toward focus. Researchers believe this phenomenon occurs because it keeps a part of the mind active that is likely to drift towards other topics. When a task does not fully immerse us, that leftover attention can cause restlessness. Rolling an object bridges the gap and keeps the mind active. The research compares it to faint background music.
